Gollum is a Stoor Hobbit originally named Smeagol, who is corrupted by the One Ring and becomes obsessed with it. His name derives from the distinctive swallowing noises he makes. Smeagol killed his cousin, Deagol, to possess the Ring, and the Ring’s power extended his life and twisted his body and mind. He lived for centuries in a cave in the Misty Mountains, eventually becoming the creature known as Gollum.
